Democratic Socialists Gain Influence as Poll Shows Shocking Trends

1 week ago 0

Recent polling suggests a significant portion of Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults now identify as ‘democratic socialists.’ According to a CNN poll, shared with Fox News Digital, about 34% of Democrats lean towards democratic socialism. Overall, 15% of all respondents in the poll also identify themselves as democratic socialists.

The poll highlights that those who aligned with democratic socialism are mainly young, White Americans. Specifically, 59% of these respondents are younger than 45 and 57% are White. This growing identification comes alongside rising concern over socialism and the influence of groups like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) on the political landscape.

Socialists celebrated a primary night as DSA-backed candidates win and advance across several regions.

The poll, conducted by SSRS in conjunction with CNN, notes that Democrats identifying as democratic socialists are less likely to have a college degree and tend to earn less than $100,000 annually. Interestingly, these democratic socialists are more motivated to vote. CNN reported that 66% are ‘extremely motivated’ to vote, compared to 57% of other Democrats.

Over the last year, democratic socialists have seen significant successes at the polls. In New York City, Zohran Mamdani, backed by the DSA, secured the position of mayor. Seattle voters also elected socialist Democrat Katie Wilson as mayor. On a federal level, DSA-supported candidates have won Democratic primaries in New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Abdul El-Sayed is favored for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan.

Concerns are mounting regarding the DSA’s influence, given their platform advocating substantial changes to America’s governance. National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella expressed worry, noting the DSA’s push to abolish ICE, defund the police, eliminate prisons, and make significant alterations to congressional structures.

The DSA’s updated policy platform includes proposals to remove the U.S. Senate, altering the president and Supreme Court’s roles within a structure governed by Congress. Other suggestions aim for mass amnesty for immigrants, defunding the Department of War, ending deportations, promoting free migration across countries, and extending voting rights to various groups.

The platform also seeks to establish a 32-hour work week, implement Medicare-for-all, cancel student debt, abolish cash bail, and enforce universal rent control.

RNC spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre told Fox News Digital that the left’s adherence to these policies will negatively affect them in future races. She believes socialism is impacting the Democrat Party, while most Americans reject these radical policies.

Fox News Digital has contacted the DSA and the Democratic National Committee for comments. The article’s author, Peter Pinedo, specializes in political writing for Fox News Digital.
