President Donald Trump has voiced his apprehension, labeling Lewis George a ‘communist’ and expressing intentions to block policies he claims could compromise public safety. Trump’s stance is that these policies might undo his administration’s efforts to lower crime rates in the capital.
“Janeese Lewis George, the Communist…has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens…resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things,'” Trump stated on Truth Social.
Lewis George recently defeated Kenyan McDuffie and several others in the Democratic mayoral primary, setting her up as a strong candidate to succeed Mayor Muriel Bowser in a city heavily dominated by Democrats. Her success indicates probable confrontations with Trump, who has frequently emphasized crime reduction and the capital’s reshaping as forefront issues during his presidency.
Trump has maintained a National Guard presence in Washington, D.C., and has often warned about ending the District’s home rule if local governance is deemed ineffective in curbing crime. Lewis George has criticized these federal actions, particularly the deployment of the National Guard, describing them as aggressive measures against city residents.
Throughout her campaign, Lewis George argued that federal forces and ICE agents present more significant risks to young residents than juvenile delinquency. Instead of curfews and federal intervention, she endorses increased youth programs and community investment.
Trump has hinted that he might consider greater federal dominance over Washington if Lewis George takes office. “We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses,” he commented, suggesting potential federal governance to prevent perceived mismanagement.
