Bride Suffers Allergic Reaction to Eyelash Extensions Before Wedding

A bride-to-be, Polly Bibby, faced an unforeseen challenge just before her wedding day. Hoping to look ‘like a princess,’ she opted for classic eyelash extensions. Unfortunately, she experienced a severe allergic reaction, altering her wedding plans dramatically.

Bibby, 26, an illustrator, generally preferred minimal makeup. In preparation for her wedding, she had a patch test, which showed no reaction, allowing her to proceed with the extensions. The procedure cost her about $88 and initially pleased her with a more elegant appearance.

However, a few hours after the appointment, her eyes began watering and felt sore. At first, she dismissed the symptoms as hay fever. The situation escalated when her eyes started to sting and stick together because of yellow discharge. Realizing the severity, she contacted urgent medical services and was advised to go to the hospital.

At Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, a nurse confirmed she had an allergic reaction to the eyelash extensions. A course of antibiotics and antihistamines was prescribed, and she was told to wait three days for her swollen eyes to subside before removing the false lashes.

Rebecca J. Taylor, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist, stated on the American Academy of Ophthalmology website that eyelash procedures carry risks including trauma, infection, and allergic reactions to the glue. Ensuring a professional application in a clean environment is crucial.

Despite her skin healing, Bibby worried about her appearance for her wedding to her fiancé, Benjamin May. She shared her ordeal to caution other brides against trying new treatments close to their big day.

Bibby recounted how hours after her appointment, her partner noticed her red eyes. By evening, they were raw and stinging intensely.

“The only way I can describe how I looked is like the man from ‘The Goonies’ with the big puffy eyes called Sloth. I just didn’t look like myself,” she expressed.

During the lash removal, Bibby felt excruciating pain. She described the process as “acid being poured onto her face,” while her eyes were red and vision blurred. “I won’t be getting eyelash extensions for the big day,” she stated, adding that the experience taught her to stick with mascara in the future.

Bibby hopes others learn from her experience and avoid similar beauty mishaps.
