Lindy Li, once a prominent Democratic fundraiser, thinks President Joe Biden is making a mistake by offering explanations for his re-election bid in 2024 despite widespread concerns about his age and cognitive capabilities. She argues his forthcoming memoir, “Promise Me, America,” could reopen old wounds Democrats struggled with after their loss in the 2024 election.
Biden, Li contends, seemed unappealing to many within the party. She recalls how, after Biden’s departure on July 21, there was no farewell except a modest staff gathering in the Rose Garden.
Li believes Biden is being distracted with writing tasks, instead of enjoying retirement. She criticizes decisions made to run again for the presidency, suggesting even Democrats lacked enthusiasm for his tenure.
Amidst rumors of his cognitive decline, Biden ignited social media reactions when he announced his book describing national challenges and his decisions — including his choice to run for re-election and eventually step down. Critics questioned the authenticity of his authorship.
Li is publishing her own book, “Unburdened,” and claims to have insights into internal party discord and research. She questions Biden’s capacity to manage an exit without damaging his image further, an image heavily protected by his campaign. She remembers having her phone confiscated during a 2023 event due to her social media activity, indicating the party’s attempt to control narratives.
Li points out that Democrats, frustrated with the 2024 election outcome, consider Biden’s memoir as unnecessary. She suggests the party was busy hiding a candidate they felt ashamed of rather than proud of. Li emphasizes they hoped to move on from that election loss.
