Debate Ignites Over Sanctuary Policies After New Jersey Incident

ICE recently arrested Giovana Mercedes Moreno Ochompy, a former high school teacher in Illinois and undocumented immigrant, linked to a violent incident involving the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. Local police in Chicago had released her due to sanctuary city policies without informing ICE. Tom Homan, the former acting director of ICE, criticized these policies, saying they obstruct federal law enforcement efforts and threaten public safety.

Another case in New Jersey involved an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, Maria Cobon-Guzman, who faced manslaughter charges after allegedly causing a fatal accident in a grocery store parking lot. The incident resulted in the death of a 9-month-old boy, with his mother and 5-year-old sister sustaining injuries. The boy passed away at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

An innocent baby would still be alive today had it not been for current open border and immigration policies.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson emphasized the need for Ocean County Jail to honor ICE detainers for these individuals to remove them from American communities permanently. Both women entered the U.S. during the current administration, with Cobon-Guzman being permitted into the nation unvetted. An immigration judge has since ordered her removal.

Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, another woman charged in the incident, reportedly allowed Cobon-Guzman to drive her car despite knowing she did not have a license. Lazaro-Flores faced charges for endangering the welfare of an incompetent person after multiple illegal entries into the U.S.

DHS added that New Jersey needs to respect ICE’s detainers to effectively address such cases. Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill has not yet commented, though her social media activity around other national issues drew public scrutiny. Observers called for action on state matters like high property taxes and public safety.

New Jersey’s Trust Directive, which limits voluntary local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities, came under fire. State Republicans argue the directive is to blame for creating conditions leading to the incident, emphasizing that the governor must prioritize state safety over sanctuary policies.
