Deadly Fire and Explosions at New York City Shipyard

A tragic incident occurred at a shipyard in New York City, leaving one person dead and 36 others injured, most of whom were firefighters and first responders.

Officials reported that a civilian died at the scene, and a firefighter and a fire marshal suffered serious injuries during the second explosion. The explosion resulted in a shock wave, affecting those inside the structure.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the situation as a complex and rapidly evolving emergency during a press conference. The fire department received calls reporting smoke and workers trapped in the basement of a metal structure measuring 150 feet by 150 feet.

Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore stated that firefighting and EMS teams responded within six minutes. The first explosion occurred shortly after their arrival, resulting in serious injuries and casualties. Chief of Department John Esposito explained that five firefighters and paramedics searching for trapped workers faced additional injuries during the second explosion.

The firefighter remains in serious condition, but his condition has improved by Friday evening. He is being monitored at the hospital for potential muscle injuries.

Dr. David Prezant, chief medical officer, shared that the fire marshal holds a critical but stable condition with a fractured skull and brain bleed. He will be watched closely to prevent brain swelling, improving his chances of recovery.

Efforts to contain the fire continued Friday night, with over 200 firefighters on site. Mayor Mamdani announced plans for a thorough investigation into the fire’s origin.

Nearby businesses include a coffee roasting company and a storage facility. The shipyard previously belonged to Bethlehem Steel Company, once responsible for constructing Navy vessels during World War II.

Richard Oviogor, a witness, recounted hearing the explosions and feeling a significant shock wave while in the vicinity.
