Darline Graham Nordone Steps Into Senate Role Following Brother’s Passing

In Charleston, South Carolina, Darline Graham Nordone has been appointed to complete the Senate term of her late brother, Lindsey Graham, who recently passed away. Although Nordone lacks prior experience in public office, her presence was a constant in her brother’s political life. She supported him at speeches, public appearances, and even campaign advertisements.

Nordone’s involvement in Graham’s life extended beyond politics. When both of their parents died within a short time, Graham assumed the role of legal guardian for his then 13-year-old sister. At that time, Graham was 22. Despite the challenges, he committed to caring for his sister and upheld this promise, even adopting her later to provide his military benefits.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Nordone to serve until January. A special primary election in the upcoming month will determine the Republican candidate who will face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.

From Sibling to Legal Guardian

During Graham’s early twenties, his and his sister’s lives dramatically changed. In 1976, their mother succumbed to Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Just 15 months later, Nordone found their father after he suffered a fatal heart attack in his sleep. Graham was then starting law school at the University of South Carolina. Despite losing both parents, he prioritized his sister’s care.

“I can remember the day my father passed away, standing in the living room of that house, absolutely scared to death,” Nordone recalled in a 2015 NPR interview. “Lindsey wrapped his arms around me and promised me he would always be there for me and always take care of me.”

Regularly, Graham traveled from his school in Columbia to Seneca, where Nordone stayed with relatives. He assumed legal guardianship and later adopted her to extend his military benefits.

An Unbreakable Bond

Graham, who neither married nor had children, joked during his 2016 presidential campaign that Nordone might serve as a rotating First Lady. Their strong bond was visible throughout Graham’s public endeavors. Nordone frequently accompanied him, along with her children and grandchildren.

“What have I learned in this life I’ve led? I take nothing for granted. I count every blessing, every day,” Graham stated while filing candidacy paperwork in March. “I understand what a blessing my life has been and the only way I can pay you back for the blessings I’ve received is to be the most thoughtful, relevant, aggressive senator.”

Nordone later married, had children, and grandchildren while working with people with disabilities. Graham celebrated her success, calling it the highlight of his life during a 2015 C-SPAN interview.

Bob McAlister, Graham’s former campaign consultant, highlighted how their difficult childhood shaped Graham. “He grew up with nothing and the way he and Darline grew up just had an indelible impact on him,” McAlister shared.

A Political and Personal Role

Nordone played an essential role in Graham’s political career, often participating in his campaigns. A 2014 campaign ad featured her as she praised Graham’s dedication to her following their parents’ deaths. “He never let me down. Never. I don’t see how he did it, to take on the responsibility of raising a little sister,” Nordone said.

President Donald Trump endorsed Nordone for the interim Senate seat, calling it “a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly.”
