Darius Slayton Released by Giants, Shifts in 53-Man Roster

The New York Giants, under the leadership of John Harbaugh, are experiencing changes as they head into the 2026 NFL season. One of the unexpected developments is the release of wide receiver Darius Slayton. Despite initially securing his spot on the 53-man roster out of training camp, Slayton’s departure was announced by the team.

Slayton, who has been with the Giants since he was drafted in the fifth round from Auburn in 2019, was the longest-tenured player among the Giants entering the new season. His time with the team was marked by promising performance, including 740 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in his rookie year. However, Slayton faced challenges, notably struggling to consistently find the end zone more than four times in subsequent seasons and dealing with crucial drops.

The decision to release Slayton also impacts the Giants financially. Initially set to carry a cap hit of $15.9 million, his release frees up approximately $3 million in cap space. Although Austin suffered a season-ending injury in training camp, the competition for receiver spots remained intense.

The roster decisions indicate readiness for younger players, such as Fields and Malik Nabers, the 2024 first-round pick. Nabers impressed during practice sessions, suggesting his potential readiness for Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys. However, if Nabers is not fully prepared, Mooney, Fields, and Beckham are poised to take on the receiver responsibilities for quarterback Jaxson Dart.
