The Chicago Cubs secured a decisive 9-1 victory against the Cincinnati Reds, putting them on the cusp of a playoff spot. However, the celebration was muted as third baseman Alex Bregman suffered an injury.
Bregman was injured when a foul ball hit his face during the fourth inning. The ball bounced off the dirt and struck him on the left side of his face near the on-deck circle. Team trainers attended to Bregman, who was bleeding from his cheekbone and nose. He was taken to a local hospital for X-rays and CT scans. Cubs manager Craig Counsell expressed concern over a potential concussion, noting the uncertainty of symptoms appearing later.
Counsell said, “He’s pretty swollen…I don’t know anything more than that right now.” The team had a day off on Monday and plans to update Bregman’s status on Tuesday, ahead of their series against the Miami Marlins. With the wild-card series approaching on September 29th, any delay in Bregman’s recovery could impact his availability.
The Cubs discipline continued after the incident, as players waited for news of Bregman’s condition. Teammate Michael Busch, whose foul ball struck Bregman, found it challenging to focus on the game following the accident. He explained, “You never want to see that on the ball field…it just happens so fast.”
Despite the setback, the Cubs performed well in the game. They reduced the magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one, with a record of 87-69. Pitcher David Peterson allowed only three hits and one walk over six solid innings while striking out seven.
On offense, Pete Crow-Armstrong stood out with three hits, including his 45th home run of the season, tying Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber for the major-league lead. Crow-Armstrong had been in a brief slump but rebounded with this performance. This season, his achievements have been remarkable, joining an elite group of MLB players with 30-plus doubles, 35-plus stolen bases, and 40-plus home runs in a season.
Crow-Armstrong expressed gratitude for his success, “It sounds corny, but conviction comes from within, and it’s up to me to do that and to feel that way.”
With a focus on mental conviction, Crow-Armstrong demonstrated the ability to overcome challenges and contribute significantly to the team’s success.
