Cubs’ Tactical Moves Ahead of Trade Deadline

The Chicago Cubs, led by President Jed Hoyer, are actively seeking to strengthen their pitching lineup as the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaches. Recent roster moves have focused on strategic additions rather than major acquisitions. The Cubs recently brought back experienced left-hander Drew Pomeranz by selecting his contract from their Triple-A affiliate in Iowa.

Before a series against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field, Hoyer explained, “It’s not like there are many teams looking to trade players at this moment. We will continue making small moves, hoping to find one or two players who can contribute significantly over time.” Despite these efforts, the Cubs suffered a significant 17-1 defeat to the Cardinals, emphasizing their need for improved pitching. Key addition David Peterson, acquired from the New York Mets, struggled by allowing 10 runs on nine hits in just over three innings, reflecting issues that led to his trade.

The Cubs’ pitching challenges are compounded by numerous players on the injured list, including crucial opening-day rotation members. Peterson joined when Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera were sidelined, highlighting increased urgency for trades. Discussions with the Mets intensified due to these injuries, but many teams are still determining their buying or selling status as only five teams are significantly out of playoff contention.

The upcoming draft on July 11 further complicates matters, consuming much of front offices’ attention. This may lead to smaller trades for pitchers, as Hoyer noted, “There aren’t many sellers, so aspects of the trade will evolve closer to the deadline.” The uncertainty of a potential offseason lockout in 2027 adds complexity, influencing decisions about acquiring pitchers with long-term contracts.

“That’s a question every team’s going to have to answer for themselves,” commented Hoyer on the trade implications posed by the potential lockout.

Pomeranz offers the Cubs a familiar presence, providing another option amidst bullpen vacancies caused by Hoby Milner’s recent injury. Pomeranz, who previously joined the Cubs through a minor-league deal, shone in 2025 with a stellar 2.17 ERA over 57 appearances and hopes to replicate that form.
