Criticism of NYC’s Office of Mass Engagement

A senior figure within Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration faces scrutiny after comments about the mission of the city’s Office of Mass Engagement. The remarks suggested an intent to organize New Yorkers and develop leaders intended to remain influential beyond the current administration.

Tascha Van Auken, the commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement, has a background as an organizer. Her experience includes work on Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and with the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). At the Urban 20 summit, she outlined the vision for the new office as fostering organizational capacity for future developments.

“Trying to help organize people, building the knowledge and organizational capacity that let New Yorkers shape outcomes, and developing leaders who we hope will still be leaders long after this administration is over,” Van Auken stated during the summit. The event gathered mayors and municipal leaders from major cities worldwide.

Van Auken emphasized that an organized tenant is a protected tenant, asserting that knowledge instills confidence which fosters dialogue among residents. Communication, she noted, is key in realizing shared challenges and fostering organization.

Mayor Mamdani established the Office of Mass Engagement through Executive Order No. 7 shortly after taking office, aiming to revolutionize citizen participation in governmental decision-making. He appointed Van Auken to head the office, praising her for leading his mayoral campaign’s field operation, which mobilized over 100,000 volunteers and canvassed 3 million doors across the city.

Van Auken’s remarks provoked backlash on social media, with critics claiming the office is used for building political organizing strength within City Hall. NYC Councilwoman Vickie Palladino criticized what she perceives as the socialists’ continuous focus on organizing rather than improving conditions for residents.

Retired NYPD officer John D. Macari Jr. referred to the initiative as “Mamdani’s Ministry of Truth & Propaganda.” Another user described the office as promoting permanent communist revolution, trying to incite intense reactions among the populace.

Some users on social media dismissed the movement as an attempt at communist recruitment, expressing skepticism about the purpose and outcomes of the engagement strategies.

Mamdani has defended the office as increasing public participation in city governance. He highlighted that outreach often aims to validate pre-made decisions while asserting his office’s aim to include public opinion in the decision-making process.
