French tennis player Corentin Moutet stirred up controversy after an on-court interview at the HSBC Championships in London, where he used explicit language that caught the attention of many, including the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
During a post-match interview following his win on Monday, Moutet’s use of a flurry of expletives, intended as a joke, led to a $40,000 fine. The ATP described the behavior as unsportsmanlike conduct in their official statement.
‘Following the use of profane language by Corentin Moutet during his post-match interview after his first-round match at the HSBC Championships at The Queen’s Club in London this week, the player has received a fine of $40,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct,’ ATP officials said.
Despite the hefty fine, Moutet plans to appeal the decision. The ATP Tour Compliance Committee will review his appeal as per ATP rules, and they have decided to hold off further comments until the appeal process concludes.
Moutet, who needed to reach the quarterfinals to cover his expenses, saw his journey end after a loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Consequently, he returns home with approximately $23,000, which is significantly overshadowed by the imposed fine.
This incident highlights the financial impact of unsportsmanlike behavior and seems likely to influence Moutet’s on-court conduct in future interactions with the media.
