Conviction in Murder-For-Hire Case of New York Art Dealer

4 weeks ago 0

Daniel Sikkema, aged 55, was convicted for hiring a hitman to murder his estranged husband, Brent Sikkema, in Brazil. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment. Brent, 75, was found fatally stabbed in his Rio de Janeiro home in January 2024. Daniel, a dual U.S. and Cuban citizen residing in New York, was apprehended in April 2024. He faced charges of murder-for-hire conspiracy that resulted in death.

The alleged hitman remains incarcerated in Brazil. During the contentious divorce process, Daniel reportedly used a burner phone to arrange Brent’s murder. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton labeled it a “cold-blooded murder” and expressed that the verdict delivers justice.

Defense attorney Florian Miedel announced plans to appeal, maintaining Daniel’s innocence. “Daniel is hopeful for vindication,” Miedel stated. Prosecutors indicated that Daniel communicated frequently with the hitman, both before and after the crime occurred. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Pavlis revealed that Daniel transferred over $10,000 to the hitman.

Pavlis highlighted that Daniel boasted about potential financial gains from his spouse’s demise versus a divorce settlement. The couple shared a teenage son. “The defendant attempted to obscure his involvement and profit after his husband’s murder,” Pavlis asserted.

Defense lawyer Miedel argued that the case relied on circumstantial evidence and disputed the presence of conclusive proof. “Life is complex, and truth isn’t always clear,” Miedel contended.

Brent Sikkema was a notable art dealer with a multimillion-dollar estate and owned a contemporary art gallery in Manhattan. Originally launched in 1976 in Boston, the gallery represented global artists like Kara Walker, Vik Muniz, and Arturo Herrera.

In 2021, during a Zurich visit, Brent described himself on Instagram as a “chaos kind of guy” with a preference for Brazil and Cuba. Long-time friend Yancey Richardson, also an art gallery owner, praised Brent’s unique vision and innovative approach to art exhibitions.
