Controversy Surrounds Repairs of Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

The Trump administration has decided not to reopen bidding for repairs to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed this decision amid increasing scrutiny over the problematic project and the associated taxpayer costs.

Burgum, like President Donald Trump, firmly believes vandalism is responsible for the damage to the Reflecting Pool. Trump mentioned a substantial 350-foot cut during renovations, while Burgum noted multiple smaller cuts totaling that length. Repairs will require partial drainage of the pool, but no new contractors will be involved.

“We’ll use the same company, because they did a fantastic job,” Burgum stated on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Trump had initially aimed to enhance the Reflecting Pool before the nation’s 250th birthday celebration on July Fourth. However, post-renovation issues have emerged, including an algae bloom and peeling of the new pool coating.

The pool was closed for Independence Day, attributed to safety concerns over fireworks, according to Burgum. The situation adds fuel to the broader dispute regarding Trump’s efforts to revamp Washington landmarks.

Authorities have arrested several individuals related to the Reflecting Pool damage, including former Olympian David Hearn. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro alleged Hearn deliberately damaged the pool’s sealant with more than $1,000 in destruction.

Hearn’s defense team challenged the charges, presenting the case as an example of government overreach.

Concerns persist over the no-bid contracts for the project, which were awarded to companies with previous affiliations to Trump. Green Water Solutions received a $1.7 million deal for a water-purification system, while Atlantic Industrial Coatings secured $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the pool.

Democratic lawmakers are probing the project to provide taxpayers with detailed explanations of the failures and accountability measures. A letter from six senators last month called for transparency in resolving these issues.
