Controversy over Ms. Rachel’s Comments on Palestinian Children’s Situation

Children’s YouTuber star Ms. Rachel, real name Rachel Griffin Accurso, accused celebrities and leaders of racism for their silence regarding Palestinian children killed in Gaza. She stated that the lack of public advocacy indicated a racial double standard in valuing children’s lives.

Accurso asserted that if the children were White, celebrities might have reacted differently. Publicly, she urged them via Instagram to stop being racist and to take action.

The controversy surfaced shortly after podcaster Avi Lichtschein challenged Accurso’s repeated portrayal of Israel’s actions against Hamas as a “genocide.” Lichtschein emphasized the responsibility Accurso holds in understanding the repercussions of her statements, given her vast audience.

Accurso categorized celebrities and leaders based on their willingness to speak about Palestinian children. She distinguished between those openly condemning the deaths and those she believed valued these lives less.

“Those who are willing to shout that over 20,000 Palestinian children shouldn’t have been killed and those that remain silent,” Accurso stated, highlighting her perception of a hierarchy in valuing children’s lives.

Reports from the United Nations’ Independent International Commission of Inquiry indicated that over 20,000 Palestinian children were killed and more than 44,000 injured following the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas. The commission accused Israeli forces of targeting children, characterizing their actions as part of a genocide.

Israel rejected these findings, criticizing the commission’s methodology and noting flaws in the report. The Israeli government dismissed the commission’s conclusions as containing errors and omissions.

Despite criticisms, Ms. Rachel defended her use of the term “genocide” for the Gaza situation. Fox News Digital revealed that she once appeared to support an antisemitic Instagram comment, which Accurso later apologized for, claiming it was an accidental action.

In response, Accurso firmly rejected antisemitism, declaring her advocacy was motivated by a concern for all children. She stated that criticisms of Israeli government actions did not imply a lack of concern for Israeli children.

Elizabeth Barcohana, Jewish engagement chair for the California Republican Party, criticized Accurso’s actions as “fake” outrage. She accused Accurso of spreading propaganda and sanitizing terrorism while misinforming her audience.

Barcohana warned parents of Ms. Rachel’s influence over children, describing her as a radical activist under the guise of an educational content creator.
