Recent casting decisions for Netflix’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia have sparked criticism. Actress Meryl Streep was chosen as the voice of Aslan, a character symbolizing Jesus Christ. This decision has raised questions among Christian communities and media figures. An online petition urges Netflix to replace director Greta Gerwig for upcoming Narnia films.
The petition titled “Demand Netflix to replace director of the Narnia films,” launched on Change.org, reflects negative reactions from Christian fans. Critics argue that having an actress voice Aslan, who represents Jesus Christ in the series, alters the theological essence.
Gerwig’s adaptation, titled Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, is based on C.S. Lewis’s 1955 novel. The film, set for release in theaters and on Netflix in early 2027, has renewed discussions on maintaining Aslan’s Christ-like depiction. Dr. Ted Baehr, founder of Movieguide, expressed confusion over the decision. He emphasized the importance of keeping Aslan true to his allegorical role.
Baehr has voiced concerns about alienating Christians who view Aslan as Christ in Lewis’s works. He mentioned speaking briefly with Gerwig, who described herself as a Unitarian Universalist, offering a different perspective.
Gerwig envisions her adaptation as a “rock opera,” seeking someone profound yet accessible for Aslan’s role. Aged over 70, the actor should convey wisdom, wonder, and joy.
Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell attended the Barbie premiere alongside Gerwig. Her approach may affect box office success but might alienate part of her audience.
Ned Lott, casting and voice director for the 2005 adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, highlighted the care taken in casting Aslan. He recalled the joint efforts to ensure the character’s integrity reflected through the actor’s voice.
Lott stated, “It’s like casting for the voice of Jesus.”
For the 2005 film, despite auditioning many British actors, Lott discovered Liam Neeson’s voice coincidentally when listening to a radio trailer. Neeson, although not initially considered, became the iconic voice of Aslan.
While emphasizing character focus over performer identity, Lott acknowledged occurrences where diverse casting brings unexpected success. He cited The Incredibles director Brad Bird voice acting Edna Mode as a humorous instance.
Despite artistic rationale behind Streep’s casting, Lott expressed puzzlement. He recalled the meticulous efforts in earlier adaptations to align with Lewis’s intent.
Both filmmakers and casting directors stress maintaining character integrity. Market dynamics and creative interpretations impact adaptation approaches, leading to varied audience reactions.
