Controversial Call Ends Rockies Vs. Pirates Game

3 days ago 0

The Colorado Rockies secured a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night, with the game ending under contentious circumstances.

Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy kicked off the match with an inside-the-park home run against Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes. This set the stage for Colorado’s 2-1 win. However, the Pirates believed they had tied the score in the ninth inning.

Pirates manager Don Kelly confronted umpire Todd Tichenor when a force-out concluded the ninth inning. The confrontation stemmed from a play involving Pirates batter Jake Mangum hitting a grounder to Rockies third baseman Kyle Karros. As Karros charged the ball, he encountered baserunner Billy Cook simultaneously. Initially, the umpires ruled everyone safe, possibly tying the game. Karros, stunned by the call, signaled for a challenge from his manager.

“The runner failed to avoid the defender in the act of fielding the baseball; therefore, he’s called out. It’s very simple,” Tichenor explained to reporters following the game.

Upon review, the umpires declared Cook out due to baserunner interference. While Kelly agreed Cook’s cleat clipped Karros’ glove during the play, he questioned why the umpires needed to convene to make the decision.

Cook admitted he wasn’t aware of the contact until he watched the replay, expressing his disappointment with the outcome.

Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz had earlier hit a home run, marking Pittsburgh’s sole run in the defeat.

T.J. Rumfield contributed to the Rockies’ win by scoring McCarthy, extending Colorado’s lead.

Following the game, Colorado’s record improved to 30-47, while Pittsburgh’s record adjusted to 38-39.
