Colorado Democrats Censure Governor Jared Polis

1 month ago 0

The Colorado Democratic Party’s central committee moved to censure Governor Jared Polis, with nearly 90% supporting the measure. This decision temporarily prohibits him from participating in party events. The censure follows Polis’s controversial decision to commute the sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters.

Peters had been sentenced to almost nine years for her involvement in tampering with election equipment, an act intended to support false claims of election fraud. With the commutation, Peters may be eligible for parole by June 1.

Governor Polis defended his decision, stating, “My goal is to make the right decision based on the available information.” He expressed that the matter had become overly partisan, emphasizing the need to focus on the crime and the individual involved.

Polis compared Peters’ sentence with other cases of corruption where penalties were generally lighter, citing probation and shorter sentences as common outcomes. He criticized the sentencing as overly influenced by Peters’ speech rather than her actions.

Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubenstein rejected Polis’s perspective, arguing that Peters engaged in a prolonged, deceptive pattern to breach security protocols. He noted that Peters could have faced a 20-year sentence and highlighted that the clemency board advised against the commutation.

Polis claimed that he considered feedback from many Coloradans and aimed for an objective decision. Rubenstein accused him of arrogance, contending that Polis ignored the opinions of those directly involved in the case.

Democrats requesting the censure argued that the clemency undermines the party’s mission to advocate for democracy. Polis maintained that he acted in support of justice, urging fairness in punishment irrespective of political beliefs.

The Colorado Democratic Party issued a statement following the vote, expressing that reducing Peters’ sentence under alleged pressure from former President Trump set a dangerous precedent. The statement emphasized the importance of maintaining election trust and accountability.

The party reiterated its dedication to election integrity and worker support. The censure prohibits Polis from serving as a featured guest or speaker at official party events until further notice.
