Former NFL star Colin Kaepernick addressed the Trump administration during an interview on The View, claiming that the NFL supported the government politically. Co-host Ana Navarro noted that six months after Kaepernick began his protest, he opted out of his contract with the 49ers and was not picked by another team. Kaepernick sued the NFL for collusion, alleging team owners intentionally sidelined him, which the NFL denied. The case ended in a confidential settlement.
Kaepernick believes politics and power played roles in his exclusion from the league. He discussed his new book, The Perilous Fight, which explores his career and decision to kneel during the national anthem. Kaepernick stated, “I think it was political. I also think it was power.” He suggested the NFL’s response to his protest reveals its political stance, and highlighted significant donations to then-President Donald Trump.
Co-host Sunny Hostin agreed with Kaepernick, mentioning audience applause. Kaepernick further explained that the NFL faced boycotts due to its response to the protest. He noted the league’s players, predominantly Black, have power to influence league directions. He argued that unified player action, such as not playing for a weekend, would prompt quick changes.
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked about the backlash Kaepernick faced, referencing serious threats and accusations of disrespecting the flag. Kaepernick responded, “Yes and no,” acknowledging both surprise and preparation based on historical precedents and his upbringing.
Kaepernick referenced historical protests by athletes like Tommie Smith, John Carlos, Muhammad Ali, Curt Flood, and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. He criticized the backlash to his stance against police violence, stating, “That doesn’t feel like a controversial topic to me.” He emphasized the desire for a society where everyone feels safe and can thrive.
Fox News Digital sought comments from the NFL and the White House without immediate response. In an earlier interview, Kaepernick accused the NFL of actively blackballing him and decided not to support the organization further. He said he enjoys watching college football instead.
