On Tuesday night, Cody Bellinger of the New York Yankees was honored as the All-Star Game MVP. Despite past tensions between Philadelphia fans and the Bronx team, Bellinger’s performance turned the tide at the game held in Philadelphia.
Bellinger stepped into the role of starting right fielder for Aaron Judge, who was absent due to a right rib stress fracture, and Byron Buxton, who was sidelined with a right hip strain. Bellinger seized the opportunity to excel during the American League’s 4-0 victory over the National League at Citizens Bank Park.
In the first inning, Bellinger faced Cristopher Sánchez, a contender for the NL Cy Young Award. He delivered a two-run single into center field, capitalizing on a middle-middle sinker. This pivotal moment set the tone for the AL in what was otherwise an uneventful matchup. Bellinger finished the game with one hit in three attempts and two RBIs, enough to earn the MVP title. Reflecting on the game, Bellinger expressed surprise at his first-inning success leading to an MVP award. He remarked, “The pitching was just absolutely dominant.”
Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, a distinguished 12-time All-Star, presented the MVP award to Bellinger, who accepted it alongside his family.
This achievement marks the Yankees’ third All-Star Game MVP award, with the last having been won by Giancarlo Stanton in 2022.
Alongside Bellinger, Yankees teammate Ben Rice contributed with an RBI single in the first inning, helping the American League secure a 3-0 lead early on. Scoring continued only later in the game when Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox hit a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Bellinger, a three-time All-Star, participated in the Midsummer Classic for the first time since claiming the NL MVP title with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019. During this season, he has maintained a 114 OPS+ while providing strong defense across the field for the Yankees. In his second season with New York, Bellinger secured a five-year, $162.5 million contract during the offseason to remain with the team.
