Christine Taylor secured her ideal role as Marcia Brady in “The Brady Bunch Movie.” However, it came with an unexpected demand. Taylor recounted on the “Office Ladies” podcast that after landing the role, she was asked to lose 10 pounds. Although embarrassed, she felt it was a typical aspect of Hollywood then.
Before this film role, Taylor performed in a live show called “The Real Live Brady Bunch.” She had always admired Marcia Brady, having watched every episode thoroughly. In a surprising twist of fate, she received a call from Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of “The Brady Bunch.” The call was mythical for her, yet she regretted not saving the voicemail tape. Taylor felt confident about fitting the role perfectly, even during the casting process, which she described as straightforward.
Even though Taylor was not heavy, the requirement to lose weight was a reminder of how the industry operated in the 1990s. She agreed to it, acknowledging the pressure placed on actors. Throughout the filming, her weight fluctuated, visible in different scenes due to reshoots. Despite this, Taylor found joy in the filming process. Off-camera, she indulged in nonfat frozen yogurt, a trendy treat during that time, to celebrate scene wraps with her roommate.
Taylor’s experience reflects the changing demands and pressures in Hollywood and highlights the cultural norms in the industry during that period.
