Mike Shirley, the Chicago White Sox amateur scouting director, has resigned after allegations of making inappropriate racial and sexist remarks. The team announced his resignation on Saturday before a 6-5 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Athletic reported Shirley was placed on administrative leave following an anonymous complaint regarding his behavior at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California, in August. This event, meant for high school players, is attended by various scouting and front-office personnel.
Allegations included vulgar language concerning females and their bodies. Sources indicate an organization investigation had been launched. MLB.com noted that the White Sox refrain from commenting on personnel decisions.
This wasn’t Shirley’s first scrutiny. A previous investigation was conducted after a former employee’s anonymous tip about his behavior toward scouts from underrepresented groups. That investigation concluded without disciplinary action.
Shirley, 56, assumed the director role in September 2019, having been an assistant scouting director and cross-checker from 2010 to 2018. This year, his department concentrated on the MLB Draft, with Chicago holding the top pick for only the third time in its history. They selected shortstop Roch Cholowsky from UCLA, later sidelined for wrist soreness.
