Houston: Tanner McDougal shared a recent conversation with fellow pitcher Davis Martin, who was on an injury rehab stint with Triple-A Charlotte. Martin offered advice on handling struggles and feeling overwhelmed during games. “That helps me a lot,” McDougal said on Tuesday. This advice could be valuable as McDougal progresses in his career.

The Chicago White Sox made roster changes on Tuesday. The team recalled McDougal from Charlotte, coinciding with MLB roster expansions. Additionally, they selected the contract of outfielder Tommy Pham from Charlotte and designated pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment. Pham was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies for cash considerations on Monday. Pham, a seasoned player, previously played for the Sox in the 2024 season.

Pham elaborated on his path back to the Sox. “Preston (Mattingly), the Phillies GM, communicated effectively during trade talks,” Pham stated before Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. “A few teams wanted me, and the White Sox were among them.” Pham’s journey involved stops at different minor-league teams this year, including Single-A St. Lucie, the Florida Complex League Orioles, Triple-A Norfolk, the Florida Complex League Phillies, and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Earlier, he played nine games with the Mets.

Reflecting on his return, Pham noted, “This is my third return to a team in my career, the others being the St. Louis Cardinals and Mets. That means a lot. Baseball changes in September, and Chicago is passionate about the White Sox. It feels great to be back with a young, energetic team.”

McDougal first joined the major-league team earlier this season. During his debut on Aug. 13 against the Cincinnati Reds at Rate Field, the No. 7 prospect allowed one run, three walks, and hit a batter in one-third of an inning. “Growing up, you dream big,” McDougal said. “Facing challenges during the debut felt disappointing initially. But realizing your lifelong dream and achieving big-leaguer status helps you move past setbacks.” He added, “You never want a bad outing, but I handled the situation better and moved on swiftly.”

Additional roster moves could occur soon, with Wednesday’s starting pitcher still unannounced. All indications point to Martin, who is recovering from a blister on his right finger since Aug. 14. Sox manager Will Venable mentioned that catcher Kyle Teel is making strides in his rehab following a left ankle sprain on July 20. Venable emphasized the gradual increase of Teel’s activities without rushing a return.

“Teel’s year hasn’t allowed proper build-up due to injuries, limiting him to 19 games,” Venable explained. “We aim to ensure Teel’s readiness for major-league action without rushing him back.” Venable highlighted the team’s careful approach in managing Teel’s return, ensuring he’s not hastily catching up at the big-league level.
