Chicago Schools Rehire Staff Amid Budget Challenges

Rehiring Efforts by Chicago Public Schools

Chicago Public Schools welcomed students back to campuses this week and announced the rehiring of over 300 full-time employees who were laid off this summer. Of these rehires, approximately 150 will return to their prior roles. Deputy Chief Talent Officer Jerry Taylor shared this update during a virtual budget meeting.

Budget Shortfall and Staffing Challenges

The district’s amended $10.1 billion budget aimed to address a $732 million deficit. However, it lacks sufficient funds to restore all 700 positions initially cut. CPS officials are working to place staff in roles identified as essential by principals, although $100 million in designated state funds won’t cover all job restorations.

The teacher vacancy rate has improved, dropping to 1.6% for the upcoming 2026-27 school year. This represents an enhancement from the earlier report of 2.2%. Comparatively, the vacancy rates for special education and bilingual teachers have also improved to 1.8%.

Continued Advocacy and Funding Efforts

CEO Macquiline King emphasized the importance of filling vacancies to ensure classrooms don’t remain empty. Despite progress, challenges persist, particularly in Chicago’s south and west sides. King, who engaged with lawmakers recently, mentioned the ongoing financial uncertainty facing CPS. The district is currently 70% funded as per the state’s formula.

The school board’s amended budget included $150 million in unverified state funds and underscored the need to restore previously eliminated positions. King reiterated the possibility of midyear cuts if these funds are not secured, stressing the priority to protect classroom resources.

Efforts to advocate for additional state funding continue. King expressed the district’s commitment to implementing the fiscal year budget and updating stakeholders on its progress.
