Animal Shelter Faces Zoning Challenges in Crown Point

Nonprofit Seeks Community Support

New Leash on Life, a nonprofit animal rescue, is reaching out to Crown Point residents. This comes after the Board of Zoning Appeals gave an unfavorable recommendation at the Aug. 24 meeting for their proposed facility.

Project Details and Opposition

The organization plans a 20,000-square-foot shelter at 12430 South Court Street. The City Council will discuss this at their meeting on Sept. 8.

“They need to write letters, make phone calls and show up on September 8th to support us and show the council that this is needed in Crown Point,” said Donna Burrell Pace, founder of New Leash on Life.

Nearby residents and a building contractor have raised concerns. They cited noise, property values, traffic, and allergens as main issues.

Vice-Chairman Jeremy Taylor commented on the impact of the shelter’s operations on surrounding properties. This led to a unanimous vote against rezoning by the board.

Community and Expert Opinions

Rick Mossell, from Golden Meadows Subdivision, argued against the zoning change, highlighting potential noise issues. Diana Murray, another resident, echoed these concerns.

Despite opposition, New Leash on Life aims to minimize disturbances. Caleb Kreis, project manager, mentioned their facility’s innovative designs to reduce stress and noise. They are collaborating with renowned architects and contractors specializing in such projects.

Supporting Voices

Members of St. Jude House voiced strong support for the facility. They emphasized the importance of animal safety for survivors of domestic violence.

Developments on Adjacent Property

The Crown Point Community Foundation plans to build on the same parcel. They wish to include walking paths that accommodate both people and pets.

The city approved zoning changes for the Foundation, with developments expected by mid-2027.
