Limits of Primary Polling

Recent Democratic primaries in Wisconsin and Michigan highlight issues with polling. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley’s narrow victory over Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, surprised observers who expected Hong to win, based on polls showing her leading by over 20 points. Similarly, in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed’s narrow victory over Rep. Haley Stevens was unexpected, given El-Sayed’s supposed large lead in polls.

Pollsters face challenges in primaries, like predicting voter turnout and handling candidate dynamics. In Michigan, Sen. Mallory McMorrow dropped out but remained on the ballot. In Wisconsin, Crowley re-entered the race after initially withdrawing, complicating polling accuracy.

Geoffrey Skelley from DDHQ noted that undecided voters shifted support to Crowley, influenced by Hong’s controversies and Gov. Tony Evers’ endorsement of Crowley. The final polls missed Crowley’s surge and understated a significant number of undecided voters who later chose Crowley.

Wisconsin’s open primary system allowed Republicans to vote in the Democratic primary, impacting results. Chaz Nuttycombe from State Navigate explained this crossover voting and the undecided voters’ late support for Crowley amid concerns about Hong’s electability.

A major issue in Michigan was nonresponse bias in polling, particularly with younger voters, who showed exaggerated support for candidates like El-Sayed. Skelley pointed out that primary voters tend to be older and more committed.

Nuttycombe advised focusing on candidates’ percentage of support rather than margins in polls. He criticized the lack of voter data transparency in Wisconsin, impacting polling accuracy.
