Cecilia Vega Discusses CBS News Firing and Reporting Challenges

Cecilia Vega, formerly of ’60 Minutes’, addressed her departure from CBS News, accusing the network of interfering with the show’s reporting. Having been dismissed in May, Vega shared her experiences during the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference & Expo in New Orleans. She revealed her initial reluctance to speak out, driven by fear.

Vega remarked, “It’s not that I just lost a job. There is a lot at stake.” She emphasized the necessity of confronting fear to highlight important issues. According to Status News, she shared that while covering the anti-ICE protests in Minnesota, she was encouraged to include footage of alleged attacks on plain-clothed ICE agents. Despite reported incidents by Alpha News, Vega found no credible evidence to support these claims.

Additionally, she mentioned requests to incorporate statements by Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, alleging he urged police to confront ICE agents. Vega declared these claims were false, stating they could not be substantiated with any verified instances.

That never happened, Vega reportedly said. We could not find any instance of the mayor saying something like that.

Frey had earlier addressed public concerns about police interaction with ICE at a press conference, opposing inter-agency conflict as inappropriate. CBS News has undergone significant changes since David Ellison appointed Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief.

Vega also claimed she received instructions to preface a report on President Donald Trump’s conflict with Iran using what she perceived as administration-aligned rhetoric. These included assertions about Iran being outmatched by the US and Israel, which she deemed premature given the conflict’s status.

When asked whether these alleged interferences impacted her reports, Vega pointed out these elements did not feature in her broadcasts.

Despite not naming Weiss directly, Vega suggested the change in CBS News administration prompted her directives. She expressed confusion over her termination, stating, “I don’t know why I was fired. It’s been about three months… and I don’t know. I was not given a reason. I still have not been given a reason.”

Several ’60 Minutes’ staff, including Vega, Sharyn Alfonsi, and Tanya Simon, were dismissed around the same time. Longtime correspondent Scott Pelley was also let go following a contentious exchange with the show’s new executive producer Nick Bilton.

CBS News responded through a spokesperson that Vega’s assertions lack basis in reality. Weiss, when addressing claims of editorial interference in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, described editorial roles as intrinsic to their responsibilities.
