Carpentersville Area Celebrates 250th Anniversary with Blues Fest and More

The Carpentersville community is gearing up for a series of festivities this weekend to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Although the anniversary is a week away, locals will immerse themselves in activities including a blues festival, parade, fireworks, and a car show.

Blues Fest Kicks Off Celebration

The weekend kicks off Friday with the Duke’s Blues N’ BBQ Festival at Carpenter Park. Since 2016, Terrance “Duke” Seward and his Taste The Love nonprofit have organized this festival, except for a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the three days, attendees will be treated to performances by 16 bands. Opening night on Friday runs from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday features additional activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Carlisle Guy and the NuBlu Band, led by Buddy Guy’s daughter, will headline on Saturday night. Seward shared, “She’s Buddy Guy’s daughter, and they will just be getting back from touring Brazil with her dad.”

Culinary Treats and Local Flavors

Food lovers can indulge in a variety of offerings, including Seward’s barbecue, Taqueria El Tio Ramos, Cook’s Ice Cream, Happy’s Pretzels, Street Eats, and Jamaica Mi Hungry.

Independence Day Parade

The Carpentersville Independence Day parade begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, traversing a new route around Carpenter Park to highlight the neighborhood’s charm. Jen Hyde of Carpentersville explained, “The updated route remains primarily within residential neighborhoods, creating a more comfortable viewing experience while showcasing the beauty of the park.” The parade culminates near the Carpenter Park band shell, allowing attendees to seamlessly join Duke’s Blues Fest.

This year’s parade involves around 50 entries such as the Fox Valley Flourish Twirling Club, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, and others.

Evening Celebrations and Fireworks

Following the parade, the Dundee Township Park District’s evening celebration begins at Meadowdale Park and Shopping Center from 6 to 10 p.m., capped by a fireworks show at 9:30 p.m. Given ongoing road construction, traffic flow adjustments are anticipated near the site; attendees are encouraged to park in the Meadowdale Shopping Center lot and follow traffic signage.

The event highlights include food and beverage vendors such as Kona Ice and entertainment options like a DJ and a climbing tree for kids.

Sunday Festivities

As the weekend winds down, Carpenter Park hosts a car show and additional musical performances from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seward noted that the event will feature local talent including students from Dundee Middle School.

To commemorate the upcoming Semiquincentennial, attendees can purchase blues fest souvenir T-shirts themed around the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
