Cancellation of Colombian President’s Meeting with NYC Mayor

The U.S. State Department canceled Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s visa last year following his participation in a pro-Palestinian rally in Manhattan. This development came ahead of a planned appearance at a forum led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York.

A planned meeting this week between President Petro and Mayor Mamdani was called off. U.S. diplomats indicated to the Colombian government that such a meeting could breach the terms of President Petro’s restricted entry into the United States, according to both Colombian and American officials.

The State Department revoked Mr. Petro’s visa in the fall, allowing him limited travel solely to attend a U.N. Security Council meeting last Wednesday. Colombian officials agreed to cancel the meeting scheduled for Friday following contact from the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá with Colombia’s foreign ministry.

Typically, foreign heads of state are granted visas permitting free entry to the United States. However, Mr. Petro’s visa was revoked after his appearance at a pro-Palestinian rally in September, where he criticized U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza conflict and urged U.S. soldiers to defy presidential orders.

This action follows a series of tense engagements between Mr. Petro, a self-proclaimed leftist, and the administration of President Trump. The New York City Mayor’s Office did not respond immediately to requests for comments.

In a statement, the State Department emphasized that a visa is considered a privilege rather than a right. They stated, “Any individual’s U.S. visa is at risk of revocation if they visit America and outrageously implore U.S. soldiers to disobey orders of the duly elected president of the United States.” It further noted President Trump’s attempts to find common ground despite Mr. Petro’s continued actions.
