California Governor Newsom Suggests Invoking 25th Amendment Against Trump

California Governor Gavin Newsom stirred a heated online debate on Thursday evening. Following President Donald Trump’s election integrity speech, Newsom proposed the invocation of the 25th Amendment, citing Trump’s alleged cognitive impairment.

Newsom commented, “The only thing missing in Donald Trump’s speech was tin foil. This was a legitimate 25th Amendment moment — the rambling of a mad king.” This remark resonated with Democratic calls to scrutinize Trump’s cognitive performance, yet sparked controversy over Democrats questioning Trump’s mental state while having dismissed similar concerns about President Joe Biden.

“You literally propped up a vegetable and lied to the American people about his cognitive decline for four years and never mentioned the 25th Amendment once,” the Republican National Committee’s response highlighted.

The 25th Amendment, ratified in 1967, allows the Cabinet to declare a president unfit or allows Congress to set up an independent body for this purpose. Some critics argue the case was stronger under the previous administration.

Fox News contributor Joe Concha added on social media that Newsom’s defense of President Biden and dubbing him one of the greatest presidents calls for a saying about sitting this one out.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton critiqued Newsom’s stance on Trump, linking it to Trump’s disclosure about potential illegal voter registrations in California and foreign interference claims.

During Trump’s speech, he claimed the administration found election integrity weaknesses and unveiled documents suggesting foreign data theft by China, among other issues like election fraud. Fox News Digital could not verify these documents independently.

Newsom, along with other Democrats, suspected the timing of Trump’s speech aimed to influence the upcoming November midterms. Newsom accused Trump of intentions to rig the 2026 election due to anticipated loss.

Democrat voices echoed Newsom’s sentiment. They labeled Trump as mentally unstable, with calls from figures like Democratic influencer Harry Sisson supporting the invocation of the 25th Amendment alongside Rep. Yassamin Ansari’s assertion of urgency.

Ansari has repeatedly advocated for the 25th Amendment, emphasizing cognitive decline in Trump and noting bipartisan recognition of the threat he poses to national security.

Newsom’s office has yet to comment on Ansari’s bill proposal for forming a group to assess presidential cognitive health. This group would incorporate past presidents, medical experts, and others.

Concerns emerged from conservative circles about the potential upheaval of invoking the 25th Amendment and its effects on the nation’s stability.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari, formerly Phoenix’s vice mayor and elected to Congress in 2024, questioned the approach to Trump’s alleged election rigging alongside cabinet removal, stirring concerns over democratic risks.
