Buffalo Bills Exclude O.J. Simpson from New Stadium Honors

The Buffalo Bills have made a significant change as they transition to their new stadium in Orchard Park, New York. Their chief operating officer, Pete Guelli, announced that the team will not include O.J. Simpson’s name in their new facility’s recognition of former players.

Guelli emphasized that Simpson will not be featured inside the new Highmark Stadium or the “Family Circle,” which is a large gathering area that honors past team greats. This marks a shift from the previous stadium, where Simpson’s name was displayed on the Wall of Fame.

Despite his significant achievements on the field, including being the first NFL player to rush over 2,000 yards in a season, Simpson’s legacy has been overshadowed by legal issues. In 1994, he faced murder charges for the deaths of his former wife and her male friend, although a jury acquitted him. However, a civil court later found him liable for their deaths. Additionally, Simpson served nine years in prison for unrelated charges.

The organization’s decision to distance itself from Simpson is not new. Former Bills owner Ralph Wilson had already begun separating the team from Simpson due to his legal troubles. This practice continued under the ownership of Terry and Kim Pegula, who acquired the team in 2014. Although Simpson attended some home games, the team did not officially recognize these visits.

The former Bills stadium, previously known as Highmark Stadium, is currently being demolished. This past week, the team celebrated the inauguration of their new $2.1 billion stadium, also named Highmark Stadium.
