Brian Urlacher’s Support for WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham

Brian Urlacher, the renowned former NFL linebacker, has developed an interest in WNBA player Sophie Cunningham. Initially not an avid fan of women’s basketball, Urlacher appreciates Cunningham’s aggressive style and admires her presence on social media, expressing this in a Fox News Digital interview.

Urlacher’s admiration deepened following Cunningham’s comments on transgender athletes in women’s sports. The Indiana Fever guard remarked that young girls should not compete against biological men in sports. Urlacher agreed with her stance, applauding her for speaking what he sees as common-sense truths despite facing backlash.

“She just says what’s true. She says common-sense things, and she gets so much backlash. She’s like, ‘Men should not be playing in women’s sports.’ Why is that so controversial? I don’t get it. I don’t understand it,” Urlacher remarked.

Urlacher further commended Cunningham for her unwavering resolve. He mentioned that this viewpoint resonates with a majority of the population, desiring more individuals to remain steadfast in their beliefs.

Cunningham, along with her teammate Caitlin Clark, garners substantial popularity in the WNBA. Urlacher recognizes that Cunningham’s stance encompasses risks due to the league’s predominantly liberal and LGBTQ+ association. Nevertheless, he supports her views and shares his personal experiences of support within his own family.

“It’s a liberal and mostly gay league, which is fine. I have no problem. My daughter is gay. No problem. I’ve got no problem with that… But man, what do you do, right? She said what she said. I cannot disagree with her,” Urlacher stated.

Cunningham has received backing from some Republican lawmakers and advocates for women’s sports, including Senators Ted Cruz and Eric Schmitt. Despite not considering herself highly political, Cunningham maintains her beliefs and expresses a commitment to standing by them.

“I’ll always believe in that. It’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category,” Cunningham mentioned.
