Birth Order and Health Risks: Study Insights

A substantial study analyzing data from 10 million U.S. siblings suggests a connection between birth order and specific health risks. Conducted by researchers from the University of Chicago and Columbia University, the study examines 569 disease categories, finding 150 conditions significantly associated with birth order.

First-Born Health Patterns

First-born children tend to have higher rates of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions, such as autism, ADHD, Tourette’s syndrome, and OCD. They also show increased rates of immune-allergic conditions, including food allergies.

Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News, provided insights into why these patterns may occur. He speculated that first-borns receive more parental attention, leading to increased stimuli.

“The parents are like hovering over them, helicoptering them … and they don’t know where to look,” Siegel said.

Siegel also discussed how early environmental exposure could affect first-borns’ immune systems, potentially leading to allergies if the immune system is not optimally set.

Second-Born Health Patterns

Second-born children showed a higher prevalence of conditions such as migraines, shingles, substance use disorders, and gastrointestinal issues like gastritis.

Siegel theorized about parental focus and biological shifts between pregnancies. He suggested that the womb undergoes changes after the first birth, affecting conditions for subsequent children.

“I think the womb changes after you have your first child, and the second child gets a womb that’s already been used. So therefore, it’s more set for it,” Siegel explained.

For substance use disorders in second-borns, Siegel suggested attention-seeking behavior as a possible driver.

Understanding The Study’s Limitations

The study highlights population-level correlations, not direct causations, between birth order and health risks. The data hinges on commercial health insurance claims, which might reflect diagnostic differences rather than intrinsic biological disparities.

Other factors such as parental age at birth and sibling age gaps complicate the associations. Researchers emphasize that birth order acts as a modest risk marker, not a precise health predictor.

The research findings were published in Nature Health.
