Behind the Scenes Drama of Bob Barker’s ‘The Price Is Right’

Bob Barker, a well-known host of The Price Is Right, left a significant legacy in the world of game shows. However, recent revelations suggest a more complex story behind the scenes. Marc Summers, formerly the host of Nickelodeon’s popular game show Double Dare, shared his views during an appearance on Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia. It was part of a celebration for Double Dare’s 40th anniversary.

Summers was asked about the E! docuseries Dirty Rotten Scandals, which investigates claims of a hostile workplace, sexual harassment, and discrimination within The Price Is Right. While Barker was praised as a beloved figure in television, Summers recollected experiences indicating his ego was substantial, especially after the death of his wife, Dorothy Jo.

Summers recalls that Barker’s dressing room hosted the sign ‘WGMC,’ standing for ‘World’s Greatest MC.’ One amusing incident involved Bob Eubanks hiding the sign as a prank. Barker insisted on the sign’s return before proceeding with filming. Summers shared an account of how his relationship with Barker unfolded when he was asked to write game show questions. Despite delivering double the number requested, Summers received a modest payment.

Dirty Rotten Scandals also highlighted allegations related to sexual harassment with one of Barker’s models, Holly Hallstrom, sharing her experiences. She claimed to have lost her job after refusing to support Barker publicly during legal challenges from another model, Dian Parkinson. Barker consistently denied any wrongdoing and stated that any relationships were consensual.

Hallstrom detailed an extended legal battle with Barker and CBS, alleging defamation, emotional distress, and discrimination. She recounted the challenges she faced due to being allegedly blacklisted in the industry yet refused settlement offers that involved nondisclosure agreements. Her case concluded with CBS paying a settlement, although the company did not admit fault.

Barker’s depiction in the show remains contested as his longtime publicist and producer Roger Dobkowitz defended his legacy. They criticized the portrayal in the series, asserting The Price Is Right was generally a positive environment.
