Incident at the Temple
U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and his family were at the Aurora Hindu temple when authorities accused a 19-year-old man from Palatine of attempting a mass shooting there. Krishnamoorthi expressed his horror over the incident, emphasizing that the attack targeted Indian Americans.
Alleged Shooter’s Actions
According to Krishnamoorthi, who cited Cook County prosecutors, Alexandros Paporakis tried to fire his rifle at the temple, but it jammed. He allegedly informed his co-workers about his intentions and plans to make another attempt. The co-workers informed the police, leading to Paporakis’ arrest before he could return to the temple.
Arrest and Investigation
Police apprehended Paporakis at his residence on North Baldwin Drive. During their investigation, they discovered a manifesto titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)” expressing white supremacist views. Authorities found various weapons, ammunition, tactical gear, body armor, and extremist symbols at his home.
Reactions and Legal Proceedings
Paporakis is currently held at Cook County Jail, facing charges related to making a terrorist threat and possessing weapons unlawfully. He is due in court on October 30.
Krishnamoorthi highlighted the danger of anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy. He urged that action should not wait until lives are lost.
Response from the Indian Consulate
The Consulate General of India issued a statement commending law enforcement for their timely intervention. They assured ongoing communication with the Indian community and close monitoring of developments.
