Arrest Made in Connection to Eastern Washington Wildfire

A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a massive wildfire in eastern Washington. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced Aaron F. Farinacci’s arrest on arson charges related to the Old Trails Fire. He is being held on a bail of $1 million. His legal representation status is currently unknown.

The fire, which started on Saturday, is one of several affecting areas near Spokane, the second-largest city in Washington. These fires combined have destroyed at least 700 structures, forcing more than 60,000 people to evacuate.

Aaron Farinacci was taken into custody around 5 p.m. local time on Monday, facing a first-degree arson charge, according to Sheriff John Nowels. His arrest followed information from a witness who claimed to see a man in the vicinity of the Old Trails Fire shortly before its outbreak around 10 a.m. on Saturday. The witness reported the man was seen staring at trees and crouching near a road beside some grass. He reportedly appeared nervous and left the area shortly after.

Authorities later detained Farinacci approximately half a mile from the suspected fire origin. Initially questioned and released, deputies found him carrying waterproof matches and a butane lighter—both potential fire starters.

Further investigation by major crimes detectives on Sunday linked Farinacci to the scene. They confirmed the fire started precisely where the witness spotted him kneeling.

Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney Preston McCollam revealed Farinacci’s past criminal activities in Arizona, including a manslaughter conviction.
