Anti-Migrant Protests at Dover and Portsmouth Trigger Traffic Chaos

In recent demonstrations, masked anti-migrant protesters disrupted traffic at the Port of Dover in England. The gathering blocked roads on Saturday, affecting one of the world’s busiest maritime passenger ports. Participants, dressed in black and waving English and British flags, halted traffic. The protest caused a highway backup stretching four miles, impacting ferry passengers and freight.

Oscar Rihll’s photo captures the scene at Dover Priory train station during this event on September 5, 2026. Kent Police described the protest as spontaneous, making no arrests. However, local Labour Party lawmaker Mike Tapp questioned this characterization. Tapp noted the protest appeared organized and criticized the police’s lack of preparation. He suggested that intelligence may have been missed and advocated for mobilizing additional officers quickly when needed.

“Policing depends on preparation. This was clearly organized, yet Kent Police appear to have had little advance warning,” Tapp stated in The Mirror newspaper.

The Patriot Platform, a far-right network led by Daniel Thomas, also known as Danny Tommo, claimed responsibility for the protest. Thomas, aligned with activist Tommy Robinson, took to social media, celebrating the event’s success and hinting at future actions.

Thomas previously served time in jail for an attempted kidnapping. During the protest, he alleged having legal support readily available for coordination with police officers, though Kent Police made no comment on this claim.

Continuing Protests in Portsmouth

The following day, anti-migrant protesters targeted Portsmouth, where a major naval base is located. The protest occurred after the interception of a boat carrying approximately 140 migrants off Britain’s coast. Authorities, including the U.K. Coastguard, used aircraft and lifeboats to bring the migrants to shore. Thomas again urged followers to gather in Portsmouth, capturing the event on social media.

Videos showed protesters confronting law enforcement as migrants were transported to an initial processing facility. Some tried blocking buses, but police formed lines to maintain order. Emma Reynolds, a cabinet member, condemned the demonstrators’ actions, labeling them as “thuggish and intimidating.”

Political Tensions and Migration

Anti-migrant demonstrations have been on the rise across Britain over the past two years. Hotels housing asylum seekers frequently become protest sites. There has been disorder and violence linked to demonstrations in several cities, including Glasgow and Belfast.

Activist Tommy Robinson continues to draw large crowds to protests in London. At a 2025 rally, Elon Musk addressed Robinson’s supporters remotely, inflaming tensions by suggesting imminent violence. Robinson’s 2026 demonstrations have had varying attendance.

Despite repeated promises by British governments, the flow of undocumented migrants arriving by small boats from France persists. During the previous Conservative rule and subsequent Labour leadership, over 40,000 people made the journey in 2025. Between January 1 and September 1 of this year, about 17,000 migrants crossed, a 43% decrease from the same period last year. Yet the reduced numbers haven’t allayed public concern, fueled by activists determined to highlight the issue.
