Angel Reese Responds to Sandy Brondello’s ‘Protected Species’ Comment

Brondello referred to Reese as a ‘protected species,’ prompting action from the WNBA. The WNBA chose to suspend Brondello for her remarks. However, Reese didn’t reference Brondello’s Australian background or note that ‘protected species’ is a common sports term in Australia, often used to describe athletes perceived to receive favorable treatment from officials.

Following the incident in a game where Reese collided with Tempo’s Nyara Sabally, Brondello expressed frustration with what she viewed as unfair officiating. Consequently, she labeled Reese using a term familiar in Australian sports. Angel Reese responded to the comment on social media, interpreting it as an attack on a Black woman and categorized it as discrimination.

Brondello, realizing the impact of her words, issued a public apology to Reese, acknowledging that her remarks had unintended effects. She explained that her frustration was directed at the officiating and not intended to target Reese personally. Brondello, with 27 years in the WNBA, reiterated her commitment to working with and learning from Black women throughout her career.

Brondello sought to clarify her intentions, acknowledging that while the term is commonplace in Australia, its meaning can differ in the United States, where racial sensitivity is significant.

Despite Reese’s statements, she hasn’t yet directly engaged in a one-on-one dialogue with Brondello. Angel Reese maintains her stance, thanking the WNBA for the measures taken and classifying Brondello’s comment as discriminatory.
