Andre Drummond’s Early Impact for the Knicks

Andre Drummond has quickly established his presence with the New York Knicks. His impressive performance provides hope for a future without Mitchell Robinson. Drummond’s historic first-half against Philadelphia showcases his potential.

The Knicks’ public relations highlighted the achievement during the game. According to their statement, “Andre Drummond’s double-double in the first half today was the third fastest (14:18) by any Knicks player since 1996-97 (play-by-play era). He is also the first and only player in Knicks history to record a first half double-double in a Knicks season-opener dating back to 96-97.” This underscores Drummond’s immediate impact as he steps in to fill the void left by Robinson, who moved to Boston in free agency.

Robinson played a pivotal role in the Knicks’ championship success, offering rebounding, interior defense, and physicality. Although replacing his performance requires a collective effort, Drummond’s contributions show that New York has a dependable option in the center position.

The 33-year-old Drummond signed with the Knicks on a one-year, $3.9 million contract after a season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He posted averages of 6.4 points and 8.4 rebounds across 63 games, including 25 starts with Philadelphia.

In just 18 minutes of play, Drummond has recorded 10 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and two blocks. This output meets the expectations for a veteran backup. While he may not replicate every aspect of Robinson’s game, Drummond’s rebounding and strong finishes around the rim provide key support for the frontcourt.

Although it is early in the season, and many questions remain about the Knicks’ center rotation, Drummond’s debut presents a positive outlook. For a team defending its championship, his performance suggests Robinson’s absence might not create as significant a gap as initially feared.
