A fire involving an ammonia gas leak occurred inside a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights, leading to health orders regarding air quality.

Shelter in Place

A shelter-in-place order was activated for the area south of the 101 Freeway to Washington Boulevard, and east of Soto Street to Indiana Street. Residents within these boundaries were advised to:

  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Turn off air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Bring people and pets into an interior room.
  • Close vents.

Smoke Advisory

A smoke advisory was issued for East Los Angeles. Public health officials urged people to limit outdoor exercise, while individuals with health concerns were told to stay inside. L.A. County recommended that residents exercise caution when outside in areas like Montebello and Monterey Park. Those sensitive to health issues should go indoors, close windows and doors, and limit exposure to outdoor air. In case of emergencies, residents should call 911.

The National Weather Service forecasted southwest winds at 6-12 mph for the evening, potentially affecting the spread of smoke.

Evacuations

A small number of people closest to the fire site were evacuated for their safety.
