Americans Show More Concern Than Excitement Over AI Growth

A recent survey indicates Americans are significantly more concerned than excited about the increasing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in society. The survey, conducted by the nonprofit Athena Insights, reveals that 65% of Americans express concern over AI’s growing presence. Of the 1,814 respondents, 28% are “very concerned,” while 37% are “somewhat concerned.” In contrast, only 6% are “very excited,” and 18% are “somewhat excited.”

Despite varying opinions among policymakers, both Democratic and Republican parties share similar concerns regarding AI. Colin Hyatt Bortner, the research lead for Athena Insights, stated the survey aims to track changes in public opinion on AI over time. The survey will be administered every other week for the upcoming year, capturing shifts in sentiment as AI evolves.

Bortner emphasized the need for a neutral survey instrument to assess AI’s dual impact on society. It gauges whether AI’s influence leads to negative or positive outcomes, including its potential to advance medical and scientific fields. The ongoing survey results will likely prompt policy responses based on public sentiment.
