AI’s New Role in Human Interaction
Artificial intelligence is increasingly entering spaces traditionally occupied by humans, such as offering workplace guidance and emotional support. Hy, a venture ecosystem, believes this shift might enhance the value of face-to-face human interactions. The company is pioneering methods to integrate AI in documenting and analyzing in-person conversations.
During their forest walk experiments, individuals converse with a human listener while AI records and summarizes the dialogue. Weston Mossman, Hy’s head of product and experience, emphasizes the potential for AI to document discussions, preserve decisions, and aid in knowledge mapping, while humans maintain control over meaning and direction.
Experimentation and Insights
Hy has undertaken 21 experiments, ensuring participants retain ownership of their conversation transcripts. The AI then provides various perspectives on these discussions, allowing individuals to determine the significance of these insights for future conversations or decisions.
These conversations are compiled into a shared repository, where AI analyzes them for patterns. This helps Hy’s team identify areas needing further exploration. Since launching in San Francisco’s Bay Area on September 19, Hy collaborates with over 100 groups, including tech firms and financial institutions. An expansion to Lisbon, Portugal, is set for November.
A New Approach to Growth
Hy aims to foster growth through local communities, permitting ideas to adapt according to recipient environments, stated founder and CEO Ariana Bahrami.
The Connection Gap: AI’s Influence
Hy describes itself as an incubator for the life-centric economy, focusing on exploring existing AI models for promoting love, life, and joy. This approach comes at a pertinent time. According to the American Psychological Association’s 2025 Stress in America survey, 54% of U.S. adults experienced feelings of isolation. Similarly, 69% expressed a need for more emotional support over the past year, while 92% found meaning in relationships.
AI is emerging as a tool for emotional support, with a NAMI/Ipsos poll indicating 12% of U.S. adults were likely to use AI chatbots for mental-health treatment soon.
Reflecting the same inclination towards connection, offline gatherings are rising. Strava’s 2025 Year in Sport report shows a significant increase in club organizations and events.
AI Supporting Human Interactions
Hy’s focus is on leveraging AI to support human interactions without replacing them. The division of labor is defined by researcher Dave Snowden’s framework: AI emphasizes information organization (‘salience’), while humans focus on understanding (‘sapience’) and emotional experiences (‘sentience’).
Implementing this method has transformed Hy’s operations, significantly reducing documentation time and allowing increased focus on discussions and relationships.
Hy is still formulating ways to evaluate the impact of its methodology. While loneliness existed before advanced AI, Hy suggests that increasing AI involvement opens opportunities for enhancing genuine human connections.
