Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a rare issue that unites people across political divides as midterm elections approach. According to an NBC News Decision Desk poll, Americans from various political backgrounds are increasingly worried about the quick expansion of AI infrastructure.
The poll reveals that 34% of respondents identify as Republican, 29% as Independent, and 37% as Democrat. A significant 69% of those surveyed oppose the construction of an AI data center in their area, with 45% strongly against it. Only 31% express support for one nearby. Additionally, 70% express more concern than excitement about AI developments.

The results indicate that AI-related concerns cut across traditional party lines, as many believe its infrastructure could directly affect local communities. When asked which political party they trust more to handle AI policy, 44% chose neither, while 20% favored Democrats and 16% leaned towards Republicans.
The poll, which sampled 7,105 adults between August 20 and September 1, has a margin of error of ±3.3 percentage points.
Bill Gates’ Concerns on AI
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has raised alarms over the public’s lack of active debate on AI. He highlighted risks such as cyberattacks, bioterrorism, and psychological impacts, expressing surprise at the lack of firm regulations. According to Gates, restricting data centers will not notably slow AI progression, as companies might build them elsewhere.
Data Center Debate Intensifies
Concerns about data centers focus on their need for electricity, water, and land, and who funds the infrastructure. Proponents argue they can drive job creation and economic growth, while critics worry about resource strain and higher utility costs. These tensions have made data centers a notable political issue, affecting local communities considering proposals.
The Trump administration has advocated expanding AI capabilities and data center investments. Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, emphasizes the importance of addressing potential community impacts, such as power and water use. He has blocked numerous data center projects to safeguard local resources.

Trump’s Perspective on Data Centers
Former President Donald Trump argues that rejecting data centers could hinder economic progress, pointing out that opponents might fall behind while other places welcome these projects. Trump has cautioned that China could gain an advantage from the lack of support for data centers.
About 38% of survey respondents express significant concern about China leading in AI, driven largely by self-identified Republicans.
Impact of AI on Society
The poll shows skepticism about AI’s role in jobs and society. Around 53% believe AI will harm job prospects, while 27% see beneficial impacts. Nearly 30% view AI’s societal benefits as high, while others rate them lower. Regarding democratic processes, 64% predict more harm than good from AI.
Opinions are divided on AI’s effects on healthcare, with 47% foreseeing positive outcomes and 30% anticipating more harm. Over half of respondents use AI frequently, with only 22% having never used it.
