A Wedding Honoring Legacy in Aurora

3 hours ago 0

Some weddings hold significance based on their location, while others become memorable because of the people who attend. For Samantha Albright and Josh Campbell, their intimate ceremony in Aurora was particularly meaningful due to two people who couldn’t be there. They exchanged vows at Chet and Judy Albright Park on Iowa Avenue, named in honor of Samantha’s grandparents, whose legacy remains influential in their family and community.

As they contemplated wedding venues, Samantha revealed having several options in mind. However, as they reflected on those present and those absent, the choice of location became clear and fitting.

Chet Albright, who passed away in 2017, met his wife Judy at Mooseheart, where both were residents. Married for 56 years, Chet went on to become the first 6th Ward alderman on Aurora’s City Council. His eight years in this role were transformative for the city, according to current Alderman Mike Saville, who succeeded him after Chet stepped down in 1987 to work at Mooseheart.

On the city council, Chet Albright contributed significantly to the city’s governance evolution. As chair of the Plan Commission, he played a part in establishing the economic development office, driving growth on the far East Side. This included developing what started as a simple two-lane road after Fox Valley Mall’s construction in 1974.

A former owner of Northgate Barber Shop, Chet was active in community organizations such as Boys Baseball of Aurora, the Batavia Moose, and the Aurora Rotary clubs. Meanwhile, Judy worked with special needs children at Hope Wall School. Both were remembered for their love of family and community, as well as their ability to make everyone around them feel significant.

Samantha described her grandmother as quiet and reserved, while Chet was an extrovert who greeted people by name wherever they went. Her grandparents were her biggest supporters, attending her school and sporting events faithfully. She fondly recalls conversations with Chet in the family’s four-seasons room, where his storytelling skills shone as he practiced public speeches with her.

At the wedding, attended by 16 family members, Samantha and Josh exchanged rings infused with emotion. These rings were the wedding bands of her grandparents, given to her by Judy after Chet’s unexpected passing from a heart attack at Mooseheart.

Alderman Saville expressed delight that the couple chose the park he helped establish as their wedding venue. Throughout her life, Samantha recalls rides with her grandfather, who pointed out city developments with pride and an unwavering positive outlook.

The park, dedicated to Chet and Judy Albright’s contributions, perfectly encapsulated this pride on their special day. Judy left behind a card for her granddaughter, urging her to enrich others’ lives as they had enriched hers. Samantha had these words tattooed on her forearm, surrounded by floral designs, visible as she and Josh committed to their future together.
