A New Generation of Labor Organizers Seek Change

2 weeks ago 0

In a new book exploring modern labor movements, a fresh wave of labor organizers is highlighted as they work to form unions within their workplaces. This effort reflects a broader shift in the labor landscape, where traditional job securities have evolved.

The narrative young people have heard for more than a generation is clear: pursuing higher education is essential. While obtaining a college degree doesn’t automatically lead to financial prosperity, it has been seen as a safeguard. It promises to protect individuals from the most unstable areas of the labor market. A degree was particularly valuable as factory jobs disappeared and clerical positions became automated.

Without a college diploma, many risk becoming part of a growing service economy. This sector often features unpredictable work hours, stagnant salaries, and a diminishing sense of autonomy, starkly contrasting with the security once offered by manufacturing or clerical work.
