Spokane, a city in Washington, recently faced a significant wildfire event. The Old Trails Fire ravaged several neighborhoods, destroying numerous structures on August 1. Lindsey Wasson, a staff photographer for The Associated Press from Seattle, embarked on a journey to document this disaster.
An Unforgettable Moment
Lindsey was assigned to cover the situation in Spokane promptly. The task came with challenges, especially access limitations post-disaster. After the wildfires, road restrictions were likely to increase without prior warning. Despite these obstacles, Lindsey managed to reach an affected neighborhood early, thanks to a tip from Spokane freelancer, Young Kwak.
During her time there, Lindsey came across Miriam and Daniel Sim contemplating whether to assess the damage to their home. They permitted Lindsey to accompany them as they walked towards their residence. The moment was filled with emotion, particularly for Miriam as she viewed the destruction.
The image Lindsey captured was taken with a Sony A1 camera using a 16-35mm lens at f/4.5. It depicted Miriam, wearing a plain white outfit, standing amidst the ruins of houses on West Tiffany Avenue.
Why This Photo Resonates
The contrast between Miriam’s clean attire and the burned surroundings was stark. Traditional photography advice often suggests avoiding a centered subject. However, the scene’s symmetry and Miriam’s lone figure made this composition powerful.
The image chosen was more impactful than another where Miriam covered her face, as it conveyed her raw reaction to the loss of a neighborhood she knew for decades. Miriam expressed the devastation succinctly, saying, “It’s like a war zone… there’s nothing to save.”
In the ’90s, Miriam, once a nurse, and her husband Daniel, a doctor, moved to America from the Philippines. They lived in their Spokane home since 2005 and faced uncertainty about rebuilding at their age after such a loss.
Disaster coverage demands a focus on the extent of destruction but emphasizes human emotion and impact.
