Brooklyn Rivera’s Arrest and Death
Brooklyn Rivera, a key Miskito political leader, was among the highest-profile Indigenous figures in Nicaragua. He was detained by the government in 2023 amid a broader crackdown on political dissent. Rivera, aged 73, passed away in state custody over the past weekend.
Details about his arrest in 2023 emerged as part of the government’s strategy against political and Indigenous autonomy movements. Rivera, who had been a lawmaker, was noted for his leadership of the Miskito people, the country’s largest Indigenous community.
Outrage and Concerns
His death was reported by his family, activists, and local media, drawing criticism from human rights organizations. Just days before his death, government-released images showed Rivera intubated and visibly frail, causing further outrage.
Government’s Statement
The health ministry, overseen by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, delayed the announcement of Rivera’s death until Sunday. They stated that extensive efforts were made to save him, citing a bacterium linked to Covid as the cause of death.
Family and Activist Reactions
Rivera’s family and Indigenous rights groups expressed sorrow and criticized his treatment. Tininiska Rivera, his daughter, voiced concern over the circumstances surrounding his passing. She mentioned doubts about the care he received following international pressure which spurred the government to release information about Rivera’s condition and location.
While authorities suggested Rivera had pre-existing health issues, they claimed his son visited him bi-weekly. However, the family’s accounts conflict with the picture painted by governmental agencies.
