Demonstrators gathered outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday. A highly organized logistics and support operation was evident before protests began at the location.
Fox News Digital noted stockpiles of protective gear, including masks, duct tape, medical supplies, sunscreen, hard hats, and goggles placed strategically in containers and on tables near the protest site. Many participants wore masks, with several opting for respirators and helmets.
When asked by Fox News Digital if they expected serious incidents, given their preparation and gear, some protesters did not respond. A video captured an individual attempting to seize the recording device used by Fox News Digital.
A crowd of approximately 200 anti-ICE protesters, closely aligned with far-left and socialist organizations, took center stage on Saturday. Supporters of ICE, including individuals claiming affiliation with the far-right group, Proud Boys, also appeared.
Delaney Hall has been the focus of tensions for over a week after illegal immigrant detainees accused the facility of physical and psychological abuse. Detainees claimed they were denied medical care and adequate food.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) quickly refuted these allegations by releasing facility menus, showing that detainees receive three meals daily with dishes like chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak.
The clashes turned violent earlier during the week when federal agents faced assaults. Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill ordered the New Jersey State Police to secure the area to protect demonstrators from what she termed an “ICE surge.”
State officials attributed much of the unrest to agitators from outside the area. State Attorney General Jennifer Davenport reported that of the six people arrested by state police, five were not from New Jersey.
By Saturday, the detention center transformed into a secured zone, encircled by orange plastic barricades and metal fencing.
