The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a significant change in their leadership for the first time since 2007. Hiring Mike McCarthy as their new head coach marks the beginning of a new era for the team. Former head coach Mike Tomlin, who led the Steelers for 19 years, stepped down after achieving a Super Bowl victory and maintaining a record without a losing season throughout his tenure. Jerome Bettis, a legendary figure for the Steelers, expressed enthusiasm about McCarthy’s arrival.
Bettis praised McCarthy for his approach. “I think he’s definitely a fundamentals-type coach. He’s won a championship, so he’s a championship-caliber head coach. He knows what success looks like,” he told Fox News Digital.
In 2011, McCarthy led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory against the Steelers, with Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. Now, Rodgers will join McCarthy with the Steelers. Bettis commented on the fresh start, “We’re excited that he’s starting the next chapter of the Steelers organization in terms of a leadership perspective. I think there’s a lot of excitement for what he brings to the table.”
Bettis also reflected on Tomlin’s tenure, noting the impressive duration of his leadership. “I was surprised, but in the same breath, I was not,” Bettis said. “He had been there 19 years. I mean that’s a hell of a run in terms of the timetable. So, you knew that he had put a lot of time in with the organization. It’s never a great time to walk away. So, it was surprising in that no one expected it,” he added.
Jerome Bettis, known as “The Bus,” was an essential part of the Steelers during his NFL career. With over 13,600 rushing yards and 91 touchdowns, his contributions were crucial to the team’s Super Bowl XL triumph. Bettis will participate in the American Century Tournament from July 10-12 at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, available to watch on NBC and Peacock.
