Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Pamela Evette, South Carolina’s lieutenant governor, as the state’s next governor. This endorsement follows a special session where lawmakers did not vote on a new congressional map, which sought to eliminate South Carolina’s only majority Black district and create an entirely Republican delegation, a plan supported by Evette.
Trump praised Evette on Truth Social, highlighting her as a “good friend, fighter, and WINNER” who has shown support for him. His backing aligns with the current governor, Henry McMaster, who is term-limited and has expressed his desire for Evette to be his successor. McMaster has also implied that Evette might choose his son, Henry McMaster Jr., as her running mate for lieutenant governor.
The Republican primary field for governor includes six candidates: Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, Alan Wilson, the state’s attorney general, and Rom Reddy, a former business executive. Both parties are preparing for their primary elections scheduled for June 9.
